Zyvox® (Linezolid)
In April, 2000 Zyvox® (linezolid) was approved for use in the U.S. for the treatment of certain types of infections (commonly referred to as VREF and MRSA infections) and for certain types of community-acquired pneumonia and skin infections. Zyvox® is in a new class of synthetic antibiotics known as the Oxazolidinone class. This new class of antimicrobial agents was developed to treat certain strains of bacterium that are resistant to the traditional antibiotics such as vancomycin and methicillin. Zyvox® has been approved for sale in 62 countries including the U.S.
An article that appeared in a recent issue of the prestigious medical journal Neurology describes three cases of optic or peripheral neuropathy associated with the use of Zyvox®. The article also reviewed previous reports of optic and peripheral neuropathy associated with the use of Zyvox®. While these reports appear to link longer-term (more than 28 days) use of Zyvox® to optic and peripheral neuropathy, there is insufficient data to establish that only long-term users are at risk.
